Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD) is a condition that causes excessive movement of the pubic symphysis, either anterior or lateral, as well as associated pain, possibly because of a misalignment of the pelvis. Most commonly associated with pregnancy and childbirth,〔http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2593673/Pelvic-pain-years-childbirth-Pregnant-women-told-ignore-pelvic-pain-lead-long-term-damage.html〕〔http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-389319/Giving-birth-left-wheelchair.html〕 it is an expected part of normal pregnancy pain, and thought to affect most pregnant women to varying degrees, with 7% of sufferers continuing to experience serious symptoms postpartum.〔http://www.acpwh.org.uk/docs/ACPWH-PGP_HP.pdf〕〔http://www.nhs.uk/planners/pregnancycareplanner/pages/Backache.aspx〕 SPD is associated with pelvic girdle pain and the names are often used interchangeably. ==History== Although the condition was recognised by Hippocrates, complaints of SPD appear to have increased in recent years, it is suggested that this upward trend in popularity is attributed to word of mouth among users on parenting forums.
